Paifang village, 7 km north of downtown, free with ID. Born in 1904, Deng left for France at 16 in 1920; the museum opened in 2004. An early night sets up the mountain day.

Huaying Mountain Day

About 40 km east, under 1.5 hours by road. Stone forest above 1,000 m and the 1,704-m main peak; cable car up, boardwalks on top.

Tianyi Valley — Linshui Day

The gorge sits in Linshui County, about 1.5 hours away past Huaying. Allow 3-4 hours on the wet canyon trail of pools and falls.

Wusheng — Yankou Town and the Fortress

An hour west to Wusheng County: Ming-Qing streets at Yankou on the Jialing, and the fortress begun around 1910 with gun towers added in the 1930s.

Xiaoxi Old Town on the Qujiang

The old town lies about 70 km north in Guang'an district, above the Qujiang river — a market street that has kept its Qing layout. Go by car or country bus and pair it with a river-fish lunch.

Chongqing Rail Day

An honest neighbor day — Chongqing is a separate municipality, reached in about an hour by rail from Guang'an South. Porcelain-port lanes at Ciqikou in the morning, the two-river confluence at Chaotianmen in the afternoon, and the last train back.

Siyuan Square, Markets and Departure

A last walk past the 2004 bronze ding and the riverside lawns, market breakfast of salted preserved eggs, then the train — about an hour to Chongqing, two to Chengdu.
