Arrival, Shrines and Carvings

The Wu Zetian shrine on the Jialing's west bank holds more than 1,000 figures across some 50 niches; local tradition holds the Tang empress was born here. North of town, the cliff galleries carry some 7,000 carvings along the old road. Evening by the Phoenix Tower on the riverfront.

Jianmen Pass Day

The pass sits in Jiange County, about 50 km west, roughly an hour by road. Entry runs around 100 yuan; a cable car shortens the climb, and side paths hug the cliff under the ridge at about 1,200 m. The gate tower was rebuilt after the 2008 earthquake. Tang poet Li Bai's verse on the hard Shu road belongs to this gap.

Zhaohua and Departure

About 30 km south at the meeting of the Bailong and Jialing rivers, the walled town held the name Jiameng more than 2,000 years ago and keeps Ming-Qing streets. Lunch on Jianmen tofu, then the HSR — under two hours to Chengdu.
