The Wu Zetian shrine on the Jialing's west bank keeps more than 1,000 figures across some 50 niches; north of town the cliff galleries carry about 7,000 carvings beside the old post road. Evening on the riverfront.

Jianmen Pass Day

About 50 km west in Jiange County, roughly an hour by road; entry around 100 yuan. The side path under the ridge runs at about 1,200 m, and the gate tower was rebuilt after the 2008 earthquake.

The Cuiyun Cypress Corridor

The shaded stretch of the Shu road near the pass holds some 8,000 ancient cypresses, the oldest said to be more than 2,000 years. Walk a quiet section between villages instead of driving it.

Zhaohua Ancient Town

About 30 km south at the meeting of the Bailong and Jialing rivers; the walled town was named Jiameng more than 2,000 years ago and keeps its Ming-Qing streets. Jianmen tofu at lunch.

Mingyue Gorge and Xuedi Cave

The gorge north of town stacks six ways of crossing — plank road, towpath, river, post road, highway and railway. Afternoon in the nearby Xuedi cave among stalactites and pools.
