5 Days in Hefei

The park gathers the shrine, tomb and 1999 Qingfeng Pavilion of Bao Zheng (999-1062), the Song judge born here; afterwards the downtown residence of statesman Li Hongzhang and a Lei Street supper.

The museum's Chu bronze ding, unearthed in 1933 and weighing around 400 kg, shares halls with the five-pillar bronze vessel dug up in 1959 whose purpose is still argued over; evening by the CBD lake.

About 40 km south, the 2,500-year-old river town keeps the 1858 battlefield story and the street where physics Nobel laureate Yang Zhenning sat out the war years.

The lake, around 780 square kilometres and one of China's five great freshwater lakes, anchors the city's south; the short ferry from Zhongmiao reaches Mushan Island, crowned by the seven-storey, 51-metre Wenfeng Pagoda.

In the 215 AD battle, 800 riders of Wei general Zhang Liao broke a 100,000-man siege on this ground; the temple on the old crossbow-training platform and a market breakfast close the trip.
