7 Days in Hefei

The park gathers the shrine, tomb and 1999 Qingfeng Pavilion of Bao Zheng (999-1062), the Song judge born here; afterwards the downtown residence of statesman Li Hongzhang and a Lei Street supper.

The museum's Chu bronze ding, unearthed in 1933 and weighing around 400 kg, shares halls with the five-pillar bronze vessel dug up in 1959 whose purpose is still argued over; evening by the CBD lake.

About 40 km south, the 2,500-year-old river town keeps the 1858 battlefield story and the street where physics Nobel laureate Yang Zhenning sat out the war years.

The lake, around 780 square kilometres and one of China's five great freshwater lakes; the short ferry from Zhongmiao reaches Mushan Island and its seven-storey, 51-metre pagoda.

The research island in the Dongpu reservoir hosts the EAST fusion machine — a 1,056-second plasma run in 2021 and a 403-second run in 2023; grounds are outside-only except scheduled open days. The 284-metre wooded hill nearby makes the afternoon.

In the 215 AD battle, 800 riders of Wei general Zhang Liao broke a 100,000-man siege on this ground; the temple on the old crossbow-training platform, then the city-god temple quarter.

Morning at the Wei garrison walls raised in 233 AD on the city's northwest, then the factual galleries of the 1949 crossing-the-Yangtze campaign at Binhu, before the evening train from Hefei South.
