Arrival — Academy, Goose Peak & the River

The academy at the Xiang-Jiang confluence was founded in the early 800s, destroyed in the 1944 Battle of Hengyang and rebuilt in 2006; downtown Huiyan Peak, at 96.8 metres the southernmost of the range's 72 peaks, closes the evening.

To Nanyue — Temple & the Climb

About 50 km north, the grand temple's walled compound of imperial, Buddhist and Taoist halls opens the visit; the bus-and-cableway route lifts you toward Nantianmen for a first ridge walk. Overnight in Nanyue town.

Zhurong Summit & Departure

A dawn push puts you on Zhurong Peak, 1,300.2 metres, the roof of the range; descend mid-morning and ride back to Hengyang East for the HSR — Changsha about 40 minutes, Guangzhou around two hours.
