Day 1

Riverside Jiamusi & Aoqi

The Songhua riverwalk first, then the Hezhe village at Aoqi bay in the city's outskirts — fish-skin craft and river lore; stock up for the eastward 400 km run.

Day 2

East to Fuyuan & the Divided Island

About 400 km and five hours east; the island was split in 2008 with roughly 171 square km on the Chinese side — wetland boardwalks and a nine-story pagoda. Overnight in Fuyuan.

Day 3

East Pole Dawn & On to Tongjiang

Sun up around three in midsummer at the east pole square; the easternmost post at Wusu and the sturgeon halls in town follow. Then west about 200 km to sleep in Tongjiang.

Day 4

Sanjiangkou & the Hezhe Town

At the Sanjiangkou the two great rivers meet and run on as one; the zero-kilometer marker starts the highway that runs south to Sanya. Jiejinkou keeps Hezhe life on the riverbank — their Yimakan storytelling entered the UNESCO safeguard list in 2011.

Day 5

Fujin Wetlands & Home

About 140 km south, the Fujin wetland park spreads boardwalks across the Sanjiang plain's marsh; an afternoon of reeds and herons, then the run back into Jiamusi for evening trains.
