Arrival, Taoyangli & the Imperial Kiln

The city was named for the Jingde reign of 1004-1007. In Taoyangli, the imperial kiln factory opened early in the Ming, over 600 years ago, and fired for the court until 1911; archaeologists reassembled thousands of smashed rejects from its waste pits. The brick-vaulted Imperial Kiln Museum opened in 2020, and Taoxichuan — a 1950s state factory reborn in 2016 — holds an evening bazaar.

Recreated Kilns & the Ceramics Museum

The 5A Ancient Kiln folk park rebuilds a Song dragon kiln, a Ming gourd kiln and the Qing egg-shaped town kiln, re-fired in 2009; a porcelain-instrument orchestra plays around noon and entry runs about 95 yuan. The China Ceramics Museum, free with a reservation, shows some 50,000 pieces — find the deadpan arhat that became an internet star.

Sanbao Valley & the Saturday Market

Sanbao's five-kilometre valley holds hundreds of studios; in the 1990s Li Jianshen turned a farmhouse into its first international ceramics centre. At the Sculpture Factory, the Pottery Workshop, founded in Hong Kong in 1985, stacks its Saturday market with young ceramicists. HSR from the North station reaches Wuyuan in 30 minutes.
