Small lake & Xinkailiu

The shallow small lake lies inside the sand ridge; at Xinkailiu the shore museum lays out the 6,000-year fishing culture excavated in 1972. The big lake usually freezes from late November, and ice fishing runs December to March.

Hutou on the Ussuri (Hulin)

About 150 km southeast in Hulin: the Japanese-built fortress complex of 1934-1939, ended by the August 1945 fighting, and the border-river promenade where the Ussuri widens. Factual exhibits; allow half a day.
