About 190 km up the G314 with a dune stop at White Sand Lake; overnight in a Kyrgyz yurt at 3,600 m or continue down to Tashkurgan.

A border-zone county — carry passports, expect checks, and Chinese residents arrange the border permit beforehand. Fortress ruins over wetland meadows at about 3,100 m; overnight in town.

Over 600 bends in about 36 km east of town, then the 290-km drive back to Kashgar (4-5 hours).

The excavated stupa complex about 30 km northeast was in use from around the 3rd to the 10th century, long before the mosque era; afternoon back in the old-city lanes.

The prefecture museum covers the desert archaeology of the southern Taklamakan (closed Mondays); fly onward from Hotan or take the afternoon flight back to connect at Kashgar.
