Kongtong mountain — Taoist heights

About 12 kilometres west of town, the 2,123-metre mountain has been a national 5A scenic area since 2007; the stone Stairway to Heaven and the hilltop Emperor City hold the Taoist halls, and local Kongtong martial-arts practitioners train on the terraces at dawn.

Jingchuan — temple treasure & Royal Mother shrine

Seventy kilometres southeast, Jingchuan's Great Cloud Temple keeps the 1964 discovery — fourteen relics nested in five layers of stone, bronze, silver and gold coffins — while Hui hill above town carries the Royal Mother Palace, a Han-dynasty-era shrine rebuilt over and over, with Northern Wei grottoes cut into the cliff.

Chongxin temple & Liuhu park — departure

An hour east, Longquan temple folds springs, pines and cliff shrines into one hillside; back in town, Liuhu park's ponds trace their willows to the trees planted on General Zuo's 1870s western march, then the train home.
