14 Days in Shangri-La
Two weeks hold space for weather and altitude — canyon days, a Deqin overnight for Meili, rest mornings in the old town and a closing hand-off to Lijiang.
Quick Answer
Is 14 days enough for Shangri-La?
14 days lets you go beyond Shangri-La's core into neighborhoods, food markets, and one or two day trips at a relaxed pace.

14-day Shangri-La itinerary at a glance
Use our full Shangri-La travel guide as the base and adapt it to 14 days. Keep the city's three signature attractions as the backbone; fill the rest with neighborhood walks, food markets, and an easy day trip.
Dukezong & Guishan Hill
Founded in 676 and rebuilt after the January 2014 fire, the "Moonlight City" keeps its wooden lanes; on Guishan hill a 21 m prayer wheel weighing about 60 t turns clockwise under many hands. Walk short, drink water — the town sits near 3,300 m.

Sumtseling Monastery & Napahai
Founded in 1679, the monastery is Yunnan's largest Tibetan Buddhist complex, about 5 km north of town; dress modestly, keep the circuit clockwise, and ask before photographing halls or monks. Afternoon at Napahai (3,266 m), where the grassland floods into a shallow lake and black-necked cranes winter from November to March.

Pudacuo — Shudu Lake
The park (national-park pilot since 2007, about 600 square kilometers) centers visits on Shudu Lake at 3,705 m; since 2016 the Bita Lake sector opens only at intervals, so confirm the day's route at the gate. Stay on boardwalks and shuttle routes.

Tiger Leaping Gorge (upper)
The Jinsha river runs about 16-17 km of gorge between the Jade Dragon and Haba massifs, narrowing to some 30 m at its tightest; the upper-section walkways sit on the Shangri-La side, about two hours from town.

Baishuitai
Calcium-carbonate terraces about 100 km southeast in Naxi country, where the Dongba script tradition is recorded as having taken root; the drive is half the trip, so leave early.

Shika Snow Mountain
Two cableways lift you toward the 4,500 m summit ridge; move slowly up top, keep layers on, and turn back on dizziness or headache. A good altitude rehearsal before the Deqin road.

Balagezong Canyon
The Gangqu river's gorge, its cliff walkway and the perched village of Bala, about 90 minutes northwest; half a day in the canyon, back in town by dinner.

Nixi Pottery & Jinsha Moon Bay
In Nixi's workshops, black pottery has fired Tibetan kitchenware for generations — watch a throwing session and buy at the bench, prices posted. The G214 north then swings past the Moon Bay horseshoe bend toward Deqin; overnight in town.

Toward Deqin — Feilai Temple
An honest overnight, stated as such — about four hours of mountain road to Feilai Temple's viewing terraces above the Meili range; Kawagebo, the main peak, stands 6,740 m and remains unclimbed. Sleep in Feilai at about 3,400 m.

Meili Sunrise & Return
Sunrise gilds the thirteen peaks in turn; on the way back, the Wunongding viewpoint (about 3,600 m) stacks its own row of white stupas over the same range. Reach town by evening.

Rest & Old Town, second pass
A deliberate slow day — the town museums, thangka-painting workshops where watching costs nothing, and the monastery rooftop lanes missed on day one; altitude is best handled at 3,300 m, not on a trail.

Napahai, second visit
Whatever the first afternoon missed — bike or horse-cart loops from the lake road, bird hides at the water's edge in crane season (November-March), and a late picnic on the grassland.

Hand-off to Lijiang
An honest neighbor transfer, about three hours south — Lijiang's UNESCO old town (inscribed 1997) for a last evening of canals, Naxi courtyards and slow bridges. Overnight in Lijiang.

Departure from Lijiang
A slow market morning, then Lijiang's direct trains and flights — Kunming in a couple of hours, with Chengdu and beyond on the same boards.
