Arrival & slow first circuit
Lhasa sits around 3,650 m, airport about 60 km out. Water, one slow Barkhor loop of roughly a kilometre, early dinner. Nothing else — the altitude sets the pace.

Potala & Jokhang
Reserved timed entry at the 13-storey Potala (about 117 metres; no photos inside; hundreds of metres of climbing), Jokhang in the afternoon, dusk pilgrims on the Barkhor.

Sera & Drepung
Drepung's morning kora on the western hillside, then Sera's courtyard debates from about 15:00. Both under an hour from the old town.

Ganden day
About 60 km northeast in Dagze district, the site sits above 4,000 m; the hillside kora needs two to three hours and warm layers. Evening back in Lhasa.

Norbulingka & museum
Low-effort day between excursions — summer gardens and pavilions, then the free museum next door (closed Mondays). Early night before Namtso.

Namtso lake day
About 240 km northwest through Damxung County, over the 5,190-metre Nagenla pass to the 4,718-metre lake. A 10-to-12-hour round trip, June to September the reliable window; wind at the pass even on sunny days.

- namtso lake
Yamdrok day
Honestly labelled — the drive tops the 4,990-metre Kambala pass toward Shannan's Langkazi county for views over the 4,441-metre lake, about three hours each way with lunch at the shore.

Rail east to Nyingchi
The Lhasa-Nyingchi railway covers about 435 km in roughly 3.5 hours, dropping from 3,650 m toward Bayi town at about 2,900 m — forests replace bare hills, and most people breathe easier. Nyingchi has its own page on this site; these days skim its highlights.

- nyingchi bayi town
Canyon & Namcha Barwa
Down into the Yarlung Tsangpo canyon, over 5,000 metres deep at its greatest, with the 7,782-metre Namcha Barwa peak closing the horizon — clouds hide it more often than not, so the morning light is your best bet.

Basum Tso, rail back & departure
The 3,480-metre lake in its forest bowl makes a half-day loop, then the afternoon rail back to Lhasa — or fly out from Nyingchi's own airport, which sits at about 2,949 m and keeps schedules fuller in season.
