Day 1

Arrival & first slow circuit

The airport sits about 60 km from town; Lhasa itself is around 3,650 m, so land, drink water, and keep the afternoon short — one unhurried circuit of the roughly one-kilometre Barkhor loop and early dinner. No stairs, no plans beyond walking slowly.

Potala & Jokhang

Potala runs on timed entry — reserve ahead through official channels, bring your passport, and note photos are not allowed inside the halls; the palace rises about 117 metres in 13 storeys. Visit Jokhang in the afternoon, then watch pilgrims circle the Barkhor at dusk. Expect a few hundred metres of climbing inside the palace at altitude.

Sera debates & departure

North-east of town, Sera's courtyard debates usually run from about 15:00 on most afternoons — standing audience, no tickets, just quiet respect and no flash photography in the courtyard. Back to town by late afternoon for your flight or train out.
