A slow second day at 2,261 m — the provincial museum is free with ID and closes Mondays (painted pottery, Dulan silks), and the 188-m Plateau Pearl tower takes sunset over the city.

25 km southwest in Huangzhong, about 40 minutes out — entry 70 yuan, allow 2-3 hours, dress below the knee, no photos inside the halls, walk clockwise. Return to town for an early night before the lake run.

Erlangjian sits about 150 km away in Gonghe County, Hainan Prefecture — Qinghai Province, not Xining city — roughly 2.5 hours by car. The lake lies at 3,196 m; seasonal entry 90 yuan, lakeside rapeseed in July-August. Overnight in Gonghe county town or lakeside.

Chaka belongs to Ulan County, Haixi Prefecture — about 300 km or four hours west — at roughly 3,100 m. Entry 60 yuan plus 50 yuan one-way on the little train; a windless morning gives the mirror shots. Sleep in Chaka town to break the drive.

A long transfer day — about 470 km, five hours or so along the Qaidam basin to Da Qaidam, still in Haixi Prefecture, at about 3,100 m. The jade-colored brine pools charge around 60 yuan; go late-day when the colors deepen.

Cross the Dangjin pass into Gansu — about 340 km, four to five hours to Dunhuang. With legs to stretch, the Mingsha dunes and Crescent Spring (entry 110 yuan) work at dusk; overnight in Dunhuang.

Book the full A-ticket (about 238 yuan in season) on the official platform well ahead — it starts with two films at the visitor center, then a guided run through eight grottoes. Midday heat says museum-cafe until dusk.

A second, slower dune session before 10 am or after 5 pm — camel trains, sand-boarding and the crescent of water at the dune foot (entry 110 yuan) — then the Shazhou night market for lamb skewers.

Move east to Jiayuguan, about 2.5 hours by bullet train or four by road — the Ming-dynasty western terminus of the Great Wall. The combined ticket (about 110 yuan) covers the fort, the Overhanging Wall and the First Strategic Post. Sleep in Jiayuguan.

About an hour on to Zhangye, then 40 minutes to the danxia park — entry 74 yuan with the shuttle — for banded hills best in late-afternoon light. Overnight in Zhangye to break the return.

Leave Gansu back into Qinghai's Haibei Prefecture, two and a half to three hours over the Biandu pass to Qilian county town at about 2,800 m, with a stop at the small Arou monastery on the road into town.

A big closing day — Zhuoer Mountain boardwalks (entry 60 yuan, about 3,100 m) in the morning, then four to five hours back to Xining, pausing at the Menyuan flower decks (60 yuan in July) on the way.

A low-key last day — repack souvenirs, one more round of yak yogurt and lamb-paomo on Shuijing and Mojia streets, then the train or the flight from Caojiabao airport, about 30 km out.
