Day 1

Arrival, Gaozhuang & the night market

The airport is about 6 km out. Find your bearings around the 66-metre Golden Pagoda, then eat the night market from 19:00 — this becomes your regular late-evening spot over two weeks.

Menglun Botanical Garden day

70 km and 1 hour from Jinghong; founded in 1959, the 11.25-square-kilometre garden holds 13,000-plus species, entry about 80 yuan. Do the west section first and keep the east-side Green Stone Forest for the afternoon shuttle.

Day 3

Wild Elephant Valley & the Jinuo mountains

Same corridor, two stops — the valley 35 km out, the Jinuo village 25 km. Roughly 300 wild Asian elephants live in the prefecture; the Jinuo were recognised as China's 56th ethnic group in 1979, and most village tickets include lunch.

Day 4

Ganlanba Dai villages

A whole day south in Ganlanba, 35 km out, instead of a rushed half-day — five stilt-house villages around the 1,400-year-old Manchunman temple, the mid-afternoon splashing show, and time to sit in a village courtyard with tea.

Back north via the Primeval Forest Park

Return toward Jinghong and stop at the Primeval Forest Park, about 8 km north of town, for the peacock release around 16:00 and the Hani village exhibits — an easier landing day after Mengla.

Day 7

Museums, riverside & the old temple quarter

A slow Jinghong day — the prefecture ethnic museum (free, closed Mondays) gives context for everything you have seen, then the 500-year-old Mange temple by the Lancang river and a long sunset walk on the north embankment.

Day 8

Menghai tea country & the Daluo border

West to Menghai county (about 1 hour), then south to Daluo, 130 km from Jinghong, on the Myanmar border. The single-tree forest is a banyan over 1,000 years old; Mengjinglai, the "first Dai village by the border", lies minutes away. Overnight in Menghai town.

Day 9

Tea slopes & back to Jinghong

Morning among Menghai's tea slopes, the modern heartland of Puer tea — village factories sell directly, so taste before buying. Back in Jinghong by mid-afternoon, finish at the Dafo complex, completed in 2007 near a former royal temple site.

Ride the China-Laos railway from Xishuangbanna station to Puer, about 50 minutes — honestly labelled, the next two days are in the neighbouring prefecture. Sun River park, 38 km from town, runs forest boardwalks past red pandas in rescue-care enclosures; overnight in Puer.

Nakekeli old post road & the tea expo garden

Nakekeli, about 20 km from Puer town, preserves a stone section of the old tea-horse post road; the tea expo garden sits 30 km south on Yingpan mountain with tea picking and pressing sessions. Return to Jinghong by evening train (50 minutes).

Day 12

Manfeilong white pagoda day

South to Menglong township, about 60 km, where the cluster of white stupas — traditionally dated to 1204 — stands on a hill above rubber groves. Combine with the five-day-cycle market in town if it falls on your day, and be back for a night-market round.

Day 13

Royal park, Zongfo Temple & farewell market

Save Manting Park's 1,300-year-old royal grounds and neighbouring Zongfo Temple for the end — 15 minutes from the centre, ideally in late-afternoon light. One last night-market round at Gaozhuang closes the loop.
