Arrival, Gaozhuang & the night market

The airport is about 6 km out. See the 66-metre Golden Pagoda at dusk, then graze the night market from 19:00 — palm-leaf grilled fish and mango sticky rice first.

Day 2

Menglun Botanical Garden day

About 70 km and 1 hour from Jinghong; founded in 1959 and spread over 11.25 square kilometres with 13,000-plus species. Entry is about 80 yuan — ride the shuttle, and add the Green Stone Forest on the east side if legs allow.

Day 3

Wild Elephant Valley & the Jinuo mountains

One corridor, two stops — the elephant valley 35 km north, the Jinuo village 25 km. Roughly 300 wild Asian elephants live in the prefecture; at the village, lunch is included in most tickets and the Jinuo were recognised as China's 56th ethnic group in 1979.

Day 4

Ganlanba Dai villages & Primeval Forest Park

South to Ganlanba, 35 km out, for five stilt-house villages around the 1,400-year-old Manchunman temple and the daily splashing show. Loop back to the Primeval Forest Park 8 km north of town for the peacock release near 16:00.

Day 5

The road south — Wangtianshu in Mengla

Leave early for Mengla, about 170 km and 2.5 hours on the expressway. The canopy walkway hangs 36 metres up in 500-metre spans among Parashorea trees that reach 70-80 metres; overnight in Mengla county town.

Day 6

Back north — Grand Buddha Temple & flower gardens

Return to Jinghong by midday (2.5 hours), then wind down at the Dafo temple complex on the southern edge — completed in 2007 on a former royal temple site — and the tropical flower garden on the west side of town.

Royal park, temple & departure

Manting Park, a royal garden for 1,300-plus years, pairs with neighbouring Zongfo Temple 15 minutes from the centre. Dry season (November-April) keeps mornings cool; in the May-October rains pack repellent for the park's lakeside lawns.
