City — Buddha, towers & wetland

The 1098 temple with its 34.5 m reclining Buddha, the Zhenyuan drum tower and the old wooden pagoda keep the first day inside the town grid.

Qicai Danxia & Danxiakou

Honest note on pacing — go after lunch; the ¥75 shuttle loops four platforms and the fourth platform holds the sunset, with the Danxiakou village stage after dark in season.

Binggou Danxia & Sunan county town

The window-and-palace pillars west of the rainbow hills, then the road into Sunan, seat of the Yugur Autonomous County — overnight there.

Matisi grottoes

About 60 km south of Zhangye, the "Thirty-Three Heavens" tiers have stood in the cliff for some 1,600 years — climb the interior ladders slowly at this altitude.

Kangle grassland

Pastures around 3,000 m where Yugur herders summer their flocks; yurt stays and horse tracks make a full mountain day in the Qilian foothills.

Pingshanhu Grand Canyon

Honest note — 56 km northeast, the opposite direction from the danxia; red ramparts and slot gorges for a full walking day, and a rain day calls it off.

Shandan Horse Ranch & Yanzhi Mountain

The ranch founded in 121 BC runs some 100 km southeast; the forested ridge of Yanzhi Mountain, Han-era horse country, looks down on the pastures.

Jiayuguan day trip

Honest note — Jiayuguan is a separate city in Gansu; about 40-50 minutes west by HSR, with the 1372 pass, the Overhanging Wall and the First Beacon in one day.

Road to Qilian (Qinghai)

Honest note — this day leaves Gansu for Qilian County, Qinghai; the drive south over the Biandukou pass (about 2,800 m) takes roughly 3.5 hours, and Zhuoer Mountain's terraced pavilions catch the evening light above the county town at about 2,800 m.

Qilian grassland, return & departure

Morning among the alpine meadows and the poplar river banks, then the 3-4 hour road back over the pass to Zhangye West for the HSR to Lanzhou in about 3 hours — or the evening flight from Ganzhou Airport.
