Qicai Danxia sunset

Go late — the rainbow hills about 40 km west (¥75 with shuttle) do their best work in the low light of the fourth platform; the shuttle circuit takes 3 hours or so.

Morning among Binggou's window-and-palace pillars, then the road south to the "Thirty-Three Heavens" grottoes, cut into the cliff for some 1,600 years near Sunan.

Pingshanhu Grand Canyon

Honest note — the canyon lies about 56 km northeast, a different direction from the danxia; red walls and slot gorges made for a full walking day, best avoided in rain.

Shandan Horse Ranch & departure

The ranch in Shandan County, about 100 km southeast, traces to 121 BC under General Huo Qubing and is counted among Asia's largest; high meadow country around 2,500 m, before the evening HSR from Zhangye West.
