Practical tips

  1. Layer up in winter. -20 to -30°C requires real down (-20°C rated) and insulated pants.
  2. Bring sunglasses, lip balm, and hand warmers in winter.
  3. Ski rentals at Yabuli are decent; bring your own gloves and ski socks.
  4. Wudalianchi is worth 2 days if you can. The 1-day version is rushed but doable.
  5. Heihe day trip is fascinating but requires either a Russian visa (most passports) or a one-day group visa (some nationalities). Verify with the Heihe entry-exit bureau before traveling.
  6. The 731 Museum is a heavy but essential visit. Reserve in advance.
  7. Cash 500-1,000 CNY. Mobile pay is universal but cash is faster for taxis, small shops, and street food.
  8. VPNs are blocked. Western social media is unavailable. Use WeChat.

When to skip / add

  • Skip: Late January to mid-February (Chinese New Year), Golden Week (Oct 1-7).
  • Add if you have 8 days: Day 8 in Changchun (长春, 1 hour by HSR) for the Puppet Emperor's Palace (伪满皇宫) and the Jingyuetan national park.
  • Add if you have 9+ days: Day 9 to Yanji (延吉) for the Korean-Chinese border culture and Mount Changbai (5 hours from Yanji).
