Zhongshan Bridge中山桥

Zhongshan Bridge is a 234-meter steel bridge crossing the Yellow River in central Lanzhou, built in 1907 by German engineers as part of the Xi'an–Lanzhou railway extension. It was the first permanent bridge across the Yellow River and for decades was the only way to cross in Lanzhou. The bridge is painted bright red — a striking contrast against the brown river and grey Lanzhou skyline. Today it is pedestrian-only and lined with visitors photographing the river and the connected White Pagoda Hill (白塔山) on the north bank.

What to expect

The bridge crosses the Yellow River at the narrowest point of the Lanzhou basin, connecting the old city on the south bank with White Pagoda Hill (白塔山) on the north. The current bridge replaced a ferry crossing that had operated for centuries and was the only crossing point for hundreds of kilometers upstream and downstream. The steel structure was fabricated in Germany, shipped to Tianjin, then transported by rail and oxcart to Lanzhou — a feat of early 20th-century logistics.

The river here is not the muddy torrent most expect — the Yellow River at Lanzhou is relatively clear (Class II water quality as of 2023, the first time in decades), and the city has invested heavily in riverbank parks along both sides. White Pagoda Hill (白塔山) behind the north gate is a small park with a 12th-century Buddhist pagoda and views over the bridge and the river.

The bridge's 2014 conversion to pedestrian-only was controversial — it had been a functioning road bridge for over a century — but it has made the experience far better: no traffic means you can stand mid-bridge and photograph the river in both directions without concern.

How to get there

Metro Line 1 to Xiguangong (西关什字) station — 200 m walk to the bridge's south gate. From Lanzhou railway station: Bus 1 or 31 (¥1, 20 min). DiDi from central Lanzhou: ¥15–20.

Best photo spots

  • The full bridge from the south riverbank — the famous red structure over the brown water
  • Standing mid-bridge looking north to White Pagoda Hill
  • Evening — the bridge is lit red and the riverbank parks are illuminated
  • White Pagoda Hill summit — panoramic view of the bridge from above

Tips

  • Climb White Pagoda Hill (白塔山) after crossing the bridge — it takes 20 minutes to the top and gives the best view of the bridge and river
  • Combine with the Gansu Museum (free, 2 hours, Metro Line 1) for a half-day in Lanzhou
  • The bridge and riverbank parks are most atmospheric in the evening (6–8 PM) when lit and locals are strolling
  • Lanzhou's famous beef noodles (兰州拉面) at several famous branches are within walking distance of the bridge

Scams to avoid

  • Unofficial 'boat tours' on the Yellow River — the current is too strong for small boats

Frequently asked questions

Is this the only way to cross the Yellow River in Lanzhou?

No — there are now several bridges, but Zhongshan Bridge is the most central and historically significant. It is pedestrian-only and the only one with a promenade.

What is the White Pagoda Hill?

White Pagoda Hill (白塔山) is a small hill park on the north bank of the Yellow River, immediately north of Zhongshan Bridge. It has a 12th-century Tibetan Buddhist pagoda at the summit, rebuilt several times, and provides panoramic views over the bridge and the river. Free entry. Allow 30–45 minutes for the climb.

What is the best time to visit Zhongshan Bridge?

Evening (6–8 PM) is most atmospheric — the bridge is lit red and locals gather for strolls along the riverbank. Sunset views from the bridge are particularly striking. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures for walking.
