The Beilin Museum stands just inside Xi'an's South Gate and is China's oldest and largest specialized museum of inscribed stelae. The name — 'a forest of stelae' — took shape in 1090 (Yuanyou 5 of the Song), when the transport commissioner Lü Dazhong moved the Kaicheng Stone Classics and other major steles to the present site, forming the collection's nucleus.
The steles are world-famous for calligraphy: Ouyang Xun's Jiuchenggong Liquan Ming, Liu Gongquan's Xuanmita Stele, Huaisu's Thousand Character Classic, Yan Zhenqing's Duobao Pagoda Stele — pinnacles of the Chinese calligraphic art. The Shitai Xiaojing, the Classic of Filial Piety carved in the hand of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, is beyond price.
The museum occupies a Ming-dynasty Confucian temple complex, with the halberd gate (Jimen) and Dacheng Hall well preserved and finely carved ornament throughout. Take a professional guide — otherwise you are looking at stones without their stories. Plan it on the same day as the City Wall and the Muslim Quarter.
Metro Line 2 to Yongningmen Station Exit D2, then walk west along the City Wall to Wenchang Gate. Buses 14, 23, 26 and 40 stop at Wenchangmen.
