Beihai Park (北海公园, Běihǎi Gōngyuán)
Beihai Park is the oldest and most central of Beijing's imperial garden parks, established in the 11th century and serving as the private garden of emperors for 800 years. The defining image is the white dagoba crowning Jade Flower Island (琼华岛) in the center of the lake, connected to the shore by a curved bridge. The park is enormous by central Beijing standards — 69 hectares, most of it water — and the path around the moat is a popular morning exercise route for locals. It is at its best in early morning (6–8 AM) when seniors practice tai chi along the water, the lotus are in bloom (July–August), or in autumn when the ginkgos turn golden.

What to expect
The classic view from the south gate is the white dagoba at the top of Jade Flower Island, its reflection in the still lake water, and the curved bridge connecting the island to the south shore. This composition — lake, island, pagoda, bridge — is the most reproduced image of a Beijing park and it has not changed in 300 years. Walk the 20 minutes around the lake to the north shore and the view from the other side is completely different: the Five-Dragon Pavilion (五龙亭), a Qing-era teahouse complex on the water where locals gather to play chess and gossip.
The White Dagoba (白塔) on the island summit dates from 1651, built to honor the visit of the Dalai Lama. It is 39 meters tall and visible from much of central Beijing. The climb to the top is not allowed (the interior is closed), but the path spiraling up through the rock gardens and cypress trees to the dagoba platform gives you the same lake-and-city panorama that emperors paid court painters to capture.
The Nine-Dragon Wall (九龙壁) at the east shore is one of three surviving glazed tile walls in China — the other two are in the Forbidden City. The wall is 6.7 meters tall and 27 meters wide, with nine coiling dragons in bas-relief against a blue-and-white background. It is covered by a glass case to protect the glaze from tourists touching it.
How to get there
Metro Line 6 to Beihai North (北海北站), Exit B — south gate 300 m away. Or Metro Line 1 to Tiananmen East, then walk 10 min north through the hutongs. From the north gate of the Forbidden City: walk 5 minutes west.

- Rowboat rental (¥60–120/hour depending on boat size) is the most romantic way to experience the lake
- In August, the lotus bloom on the eastern shore is spectacular — arrive at 7 AM for photos without crowds
- The "total ticket" (¥20) is worth it for the White Pagoda and Five-Dragon Pavilion, which are the highlights

Can I row a boat on the lake?
Yes — boat rental is at the southern shore, ¥60/hour for a small boat (4-person), ¥120/hour for an electric boat. Cash only. No boat is allowed within 20 meters of the White Pagoda island.
Is Beihai Park connected to the Forbidden City?
Yes — from the north gate of the Forbidden City, walk 5 minutes west to reach the south gate of Beihai Park. Many visitors combine both in one day, starting at the Forbidden City (morning, before crowds) and finishing at Beihai (afternoon).
What's the difference between Beihai Park and Jingshan Park?
Jingshan Park (景山公园) is a hill immediately north of the Forbidden City — 5 minutes by foot from the north gate. It exists purely to provide a panorama view over the Forbidden City from its summit. Beihai Park is a lakeside imperial garden 1 km to the northwest, with its own architecture, history, and much more to explore inside. They serve different purposes: Jingshan is a viewpoint; Beihai is a destination.
Is this park famous for anything other than the pagoda?
The Nine-Dragon Wall (one of three surviving in China), the cypress trees planted in the Yuan dynasty (700+ years old), and the moon-viewing platform where emperors composed poetry over the lake. The park's design influenced the layout of the Forbidden City.
