Kaifeng at a Glance

Kaifeng (开封) was the capital of the Northern Song, from 960 to 1127 — the largest city on earth in its day — and the Yellow River has buried it alive. Six cities lie stacked under the modern streets, which is why the pagodas rise out of flat ground and why a 2022 excavation shows Song-to-Ming strata under glass in the middle of town. The modern city runs 2-3 days of it well: Longting Park over the buried Song palace, the 1998 park that walks Zhang Zeduan's 5.28-metre handscroll into three dimensions, the temple of 555 and the magistrate's court of Bao Zheng, the night market, and the glazed-brick pagoda of 1049 — 55.88 metres of it — at the photo above.

Why Kaifeng

No city in China states its thesis faster than Kaifeng: here, history is a stratigraphy problem. The floods that repeatedly drowned the Song capital also preserved it — the Qing wall of today runs about 14.4 km over the stacked footprint of six earlier cities, and the Zhou Bridge excavation puts the layers on display under glass. Where Xi'an shows you a wall and Luoyang shows you dynastic tombs, Kaifeng shows you time itself, stacked.

The second layer is the scroll. Zhang Zeduan's Along the River During the Qingming Festival — the 5.28-metre handscroll that records this city at its 12th-century peak — is among the most famous paintings in Chinese history, and the 1998 Millennium City Park rebuilds its street scenes at scale, with costumed parades and a night show on the lake. It is theme-park history, openly so, and done with enough craft to be worth the ticket.

The honest trade-offs: the Song buildings themselves are gone — what stands is Ming, Qing and modern reconstruction; English signage is thin; and in chrysanthemum season the parks are heavy with domestic tour groups. Come for the depth, eat better than almost anywhere in Henan, and forgive the stagecraft.

Longting Park: the Buried Palace

Longting (龙亭) is the terrace above the buried Song palace: a hall on a high brick platform reached by the grand carved staircase in the photo below, its yellow dragon flags snapping in the wind. Below it stretch the Pan and Yang lakes — one silty, one clear, the locals' shorthand for two historical judgments — and beneath your feet, the palace floors of the 960-1127 capital.

Give it 1.5-2 hours including the lakeside walk. In the autumn chrysanthemum weeks the terraces fill with blooms in ranks.

Millennium City Park: the Scroll in 3D

The Millennium City Park (清明上河园), opened in 1998 across the lake from Longting, is Zhang Zeduan's scroll rebuilt at street scale: the Rainbow Bridge, the taverns, the porter traffic, all with costumed performers, craft demonstrations and a large evening lake show. It is the most-visited thing in Kaifeng and the most fun — go late afternoon, stay for the show, and forgive yourself the theme park.

Half a day, more with the evening performance. The park stages period parades on the hour in season.

Daxiangguo Temple and Kaifeng Fu

The temple of Daxiangguo (大相国寺) was founded in 555 and renamed in 712 — the monastery of the Song capital's downtown, where the markets and the opera once pressed against its walls. Its halls keep a 7-metre sandalwood Guanyin carved from a single tree, and the courtyard in the photo below still works as a temple.

Across the streets stands Kaifeng Fu (开封府), the rebuilt magistrate's court where Bao Zheng — the incorruptible judge of 999-1062, iron-faced in opera ever since — held sessions; the court runs case re-enactments several times a day. Between them sits the Zhou Bridge site, excavated in 2022, where Song-to-Ming road surfaces and bridge remains lie under glass in an in-town pit: the strata problem made visible.

The Night Market

Kaifeng eats at night. The Drum Tower night market is the headline — rows of stalls under red lanterns like the photo below, soup dumplings (guantang bao), almond tea, mutton skewers — and the lanes around it run later than most of Henan. The city's food reputation is real: this was the capital that invented the street-restaurant culture the scroll records, and it still eats that way.

Come hungry at 19:00; the market thins by 22:00.

The Iron Pagoda and the Wall

The pagoda of the photo at the top — the Iron Pagoda (铁塔), 1049, 55.88 metres, thirteen tiers of glazed brick — has outstood floods, wars and the river for nearly a thousand years; its park is the quietest of the city's sights. The Qing wall, about 14.4 km of it, rings the old city over the stacked cities below, and a walk on its embankment gives the strata story its widest view. Shudian Street, the old bookshop lane, closes a day quietly.

A Two-Day Plan (and a Third)

1. Day 1 — the capital. Longting Park and the lakes in the morning, Millennium City Park from late afternoon into the lake show, night market for dinner.
2. Day 2 — the temple, the court, the tower. Daxiangguo Temple and Kaifeng Fu with the re-enactments, the Zhou Bridge pit, then the Iron Pagoda park; Shudian Street to close.
3. Day 3 — the wall or the water. Walk the Qing embankment, or the Yellow River flood plain to the north; chrysanthemum gardens in season.

Getting There and Around

Kaifeng North is the HSR stop; the sights cluster in the old city, 15-20 minutes by taxi from the station.

Write destinations in Chinese — 龙亭, 清明上河园, 大相国寺 — and expect park gates to queue in the chrysanthemum weeks.

Where to Stay

Stay inside or near the old city walls: mid-range rooms run about 300-600 CNY a night, the night market is walkable, and the parks open around you. The lakeside hotels by Longting trade calm for the morning view. Reserve two weeks ahead for the mid-October and late-October chrysanthemum weeks.

What to Eat

Kaifeng eats Henan's best table. The soup dumplings (guantang bao) are the city's gift — thin skins, hot broth, eaten with a straw-side sip — then almond tea, mutton skewers, sweet rice pastes and the plaza of stalls the night market stacks under lanterns. The scroll's taverns would recognise the scene.

Eat where the queues are local, pay by Alipay or WeChat Pay linked to an international card, and carry 50-100 CNY in small notes for the market stalls that do not scan.

July-August is hot and humid on the plain. Avoid the national holiday week of early October unless queues are the plan.
