What to expect
The Forbidden City sits at the heart of Beijing, north of Tiananmen Square, and was the political center of Chinese government for nearly 500 years. Its layout follows ancient cosmological principles: the north is associated with water and the emperor, the south with fire and the common people.
The complex is divided into two parts: the Outer Court (外朝) for state ceremonies, and the Inner Court (内廷) for daily imperial life. The central axis runs 8 km from Yongdingmen Gate in the south to the Drum and Bell Towers in the north — the longest ceremonial axis in the world.
After the last emperor Puyi abdicated in 1912, the palace became the Palace Museum in 1925. Its collection includes over a million artifacts spanning 5,000 years of Chinese history.
How to get there
Take Metro Line 1 to Tiananmen East station (Exit A). Walk north 5 minutes. Bus routes 1, 5, 52, 82 also stop at the East Gate.

What's the difference between the Forbidden City and the National Museum?
The Forbidden City IS the Palace Museum — the building and the museum are the same. The National Museum (中国国家博物馆) is across Tiananmen Square and has a broader collection of Chinese art and history from 1.7 million years to the present.
Why is it called the Forbidden City?
Commoners were forbidden from entering without permission — only the imperial family, court officials, and approved guests. The name "Purple Forbidden City" (紫禁城) comes from astrology: the Purple Star (Polaris) was the celestial center, so the emperor's palace on earth was the "Purple Forbidden City."
Can I take photos inside the Forbidden City?
Yes in outdoor areas, no inside the halls (most are roped off anyway). Tripods require a permit. Drones are strictly prohibited.
Is the Forbidden City worth visiting in winter?
Yes — it's the least crowded time. The Hall of Supreme Harmony with snow is famous. January highs are around 2°C; dress warmly. The palace looks dramatic in winter light.
