The Gansu Side: Sertri Monastery

The Sichuan Side: Kirti Monastery and the Gorge

Across the river, Kirti (格尔底寺) is the older foundation — records trace it to 1413 — with a calmer, more dispersed layout below the red cliffs. From its upper halls, the gorge trail begins: 1-2 hours each way through the Namo Gorge to the cave springs where the White Dragon River rises, gaining a couple of hundred metres. Pilgrims and horses share the path; walk clockwise, and ask before photographing inside the halls.

The border bridge on the river below town marks the provincial line — both banks in ten minutes, a rare party trick for a town this size.

Gahai Lake: the Bird Reserve

Forty kilometres north on the G213, Gahai Lake sits at about 3,480 metres inside a bird reserve — black-necked cranes and gulls through the summer, a broad mirror of water under the grassland sky. It pairs with Langmusi as a half-day, and the road itself is one of the region's best drives.
