Shandong Travel Guide

Shandong is the birthplace of Chinese civilization in many ways — Confucius, the Yellow River's lower course, Mount Tai (the eastern sacred mountain of imperial pilgrimage). The coast has Qingdao, one of China's most attractive cities, with a German colonial core and the famous Tsingtao beer.

Frequently asked questions

How hard is Mount Tai?

Hard but doable. The classic route is 7,200 steps from the Red Gate to the South Gate to the summit. 4-6 hours up, 2-3 hours down. Cable cars at the midway point cut it in half. Sunrise is the reward — start at midnight to reach the top by 5 AM.

Is Qufu worth visiting?

Yes — for travelers interested in Chinese philosophy. The Confucius Temple (1,000+ year old), Cemetery (his actual burial place), and Kong Family Mansion (his descendants' home) form a UNESCO triad. 1 day is enough.

When is the Qingdao Beer Festival?

Usually the second and third weeks of August. The city's Tsingtao Brewery hosts the Asia Beer Festival — mass celebrations, parades, and of course beer. Book hotels well in advance.

What is Jinan famous for?

Jinan is called the "City of Springs" — over 70 natural springs, the most famous being Baotu Spring (趵突泉) in the city center. 1 day is enough unless you want to hike the surrounding mountains.

Can I climb Mount Tai at night?

Yes — many people start at 10 PM-12 AM to reach the summit by sunrise (4:30-5:30 AM). The path is lit and there are vendors along the way. Bring warm clothes — the summit is 1,545m and temperatures drop to 5-10°C even in summer.
