Luoyang Museum is the city's largest comprehensive museum, rated National First-Grade in 2011. Its collection of more than 15,000 artefacts runs from prehistory to modern times, and the permanent "Heluo Civilization" exhibition lays out 5,000 years of the region's history in sequence.
Star pieces include the earliest bronzes known in China — the Xia-dynasty bronze jue (with the Duling square ding) — plus the Eastern Han stone winged beast, Tang tri-coloured horses and famous Song kiln wares. The Xia bronzes are key evidence that the Luoyang region was a cradle of Chinese civilization.
The building itself is striking — a vast "eye of civilization" gazing over the Luo River. Special galleries include the Luoyang Treasures exhibition, the Tri-coloured Pottery exhibition and the Ancient Stone Carving exhibition.
The museum sits in Luobei New District. Take metro Line 2 to Museum Station, exit A, then a 5-minute walk. Buses serve the Luoyang Museum and Convention Center stops. Drivers can use the museum's underground car park.
