Jinshatan lies in Huangdao District on Qingdao's West Coast New Area and is the city's largest bathing beach. The sand is so fine and soft that walking on it feels like stepping on a golden carpet - hence the name. The water is clear and blue and the waves calm, which makes it ideal for swimming.
The beachfront is well served by resort hotels, a seafood food street and beach-sports facilities. In summer it fills to capacity and is the first choice for Qingdao locals escaping the heat.
Every year the beach hosts the International Sand Beach Culture Festival and the beer festival's beach venue. At night the seaside beer houses light up - drinking Tsingtao beer to the sound of the waves has a charm of its own.
From downtown Qingdao, drive to Huangdao District through the Jiaozhou Bay undersea tunnel (about 30 minutes) or take a dedicated tunnel bus (CNY 2). From Jiaodong International Airport, an airport shuttle runs direct to Jinshatan.
The No. 1 Bathing Beach sits in Shinan, close to Zhanqiao Pier - convenient but crowded. Jinshatan, in Huangdao, has finer sand and more space but requires the tunnel. If you have time, Jinshatan is the more rewarding choice.
Sunscreen, swimwear, flip-flops, a bath towel and a waterproof bag are the basics. Seaside prices run high, so bring your own drinking water and snacks.
Jinshatan has a dedicated camping zone and tents for hire in summer. Check the rules in advance and mind safety.
