Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon张家界大峡谷

The Grand Canyon of Zhangjiajie lies in Sanguansi township, Cili county — a large gorge on the eastern edge of the Wuling range. Forest covers over 90% of the park, which packs dramatic slot-gorge terrain such as One-Line Sky, a dozen imposing waterfalls and deep green pools. Since the glass bridge opened in 2016 it has ranked among Zhangjiajie's most visited scenic areas.

What to expect

The Grand Canyon runs about 8 km, deep and so narrow in places that two people can barely squeeze past sideways — the famous One-Line Sky is right here. Sheer limestone walls cloaked in old vines rise on both sides, with clear streams and dark pools along the floor. The park holds more than ten waterfalls large and small; the best known is Rainbow Waterfall, whose roughly 150-m drop throws a rainbow across the spray when sunlight strikes.

The route is a one-way loop: from the entrance the walkway follows the gorge past One-Line Sky, Flying-Waterfall Pool and Rainbow Waterfall before finishing at the glass bridge, after which an elevator or the trail returns you to the entrance. Allow 3-4 hours and 5-6 km of walking, with some steep sections that demand a fair amount of stamina.

With over 90% forest cover, the canyon air is extremely rich in negative oxygen ions — a natural oxygen bar. The ecosystem is well preserved and wild macaques are occasionally spotted. The gorge floor runs 5-8 degrees cooler than outside, making this a superb summer escape.

How to get there

No direct public transport. Charter a car or drive from downtown Zhangjiajie (about 40 km, one hour). Alternatively take a Cili-bound coach from Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station, get off at the Sanguansi junction and transfer to a taxi (coaches are infrequent, so this is not recommended). Drivers park in the scenic-area lot (paid).

Best photo spots

  • Looking up at the sliver of light in the One-Line Sky gorge
  • The rainbow inside the spray, shot in front of Rainbow Waterfall
  • The glass bridge and canyon mist from a distance
  • The towering cliffs seen from the gorge floor

Tips

  • Enter in the morning to avoid the afternoon rush
  • In the rainy season (June-August) the waterfalls are at their fullest, but wet rock makes the gorge slippery
  • Food options inside are few and pricey; bring your own snacks
  • The visit takes about 3-4 hours; plan your time accordingly

Scams to avoid

  • Villagers near the park run unofficial parking and charge fees; use the official lot
  • Some charter drivers detour to restaurants that pay them commission
  • OTA ticket markups happen occasionally; buy through official channels
