What to expect
Designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge opened in August 2016. It stretches 430 m long and 6 m wide, its deck laid entirely in transparent glass about 300 m above the valley floor — roughly the height of a 100-story building. The structure can hold 800 people at once, the highest design load of any bridge of its kind. Valleys flank both sides and forested canyon falls away beneath, with commanding views throughout.
The bridge's fame comes from its pure thrill factor and photogenicity. Walking the transparent deck, the abyss seems to drop away beneath your feet as if you were floating in mid-air. Many visitors sit down mid-span for photos or bounce to feel the glass tremble; the faint of heart may need a moment to steel themselves. In recent years the park has laid sections of opaque glass across the deck for those who cannot face the fully transparent walk.
The Grand Canyon park offers more than the bridge: a sheer rock cleft known as Yixiantian ('a thread of sky'), clusters of waterfalls and stream-cut gorges. The route runs one way — from the entrance you follow the canyon trail to the bridge, then return by elevator or on foot. The park also runs extreme add-ons, including the world's highest bungee platform (a 260 m drop), at extra cost.
How to get there
The canyon lies about 40 km from downtown Zhangjiajie with no direct public transport. Best is a private car or charter — about an hour via provincial road S228. Alternatively, take a Cili-bound coach from Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station to the Siguansi intersection and transfer to a taxi, though departures are sparse. Drivers can park at the scenic-area lot (paid).
