Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, in Zhangjiajie's Wulingyuan District, is a World Natural Heritage site, a UNESCO Global Geopark and a national 5A attraction. It is world-famous for its quartz-sandstone pillar landform: more than 3,000 stone peaks rise straight out of the ground in every shape, hailed as 'a shrunken fairyland, an enlarged bonsai'. The floating mountains of Avatar drew their inspiration from here.

What to expect

Wulingyuan combines four scenic areas — Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxiyu Nature Reserve, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve and Yangjiajie — covering 264 sq km in total. Its quartz-sandstone pillar landform is unique on Earth: 3,000-plus peaks rise on well-developed vertical joints across the district in myriad shapes, earning the epithet 'an enlarged bonsai, a shrunken fairyland'. UNESCO inscribed it on the World Natural Heritage list in 1992, and in 2004 it became one of the first UNESCO Global Geoparks.

Core sights include Golden Whip Stream (clear water beneath cliff walls like a painting), Yuanjiajie (home of the Avatar floating-mountain prototype), Tianzi Mountain (the West Sea peak forest and Imperial Brush Peaks), the Ten-Mile Gallery (a long scroll of peaks deep in the gorge) and Yellow Dragon Cave (a large limestone cavern). Shuttle buses run on a pass system with stops between all the sights.

Avatar director James Cameron has said publicly that the film's floating mountains were inspired by Wulingyuan's quartz-sandstone pillars. The Qiankun Pillar — later renamed Hallelujah Mountain — became famous as the identified prototype and draws countless film fans on pilgrimage every year.

How to get there

Hehua Airport is about 35 km from the scenic area (airport bus or taxi, roughly 100 CNY); Zhangjiajie railway station (high-speed rail) is about 30 km away. Express buses run between the city and the park. Given the area's size and scattered trailheads, driving or a chartered car saves the most time.

Best photo spots

  • The classic frontal shot of the Qiankun Pillar in Yuanjiajie (the Avatar floating-mountain prototype)
  • Cloud sea and sunrise at the Imperial Brush Peaks, Tianzi Mountain
  • Golden Whip Stream with stone-peak reflections in the water
  • The pillar-lined 'tunnel' view from the Ten-Mile Gallery sightseeing train

Tips

  • The area is enormous — plan 2-4 days or you will only scratch the surface
  • Shuttle buses are free but peak-season queues are long; start early to beat the crowds
  • Avatar fans should head straight for Yuanjiajie — the Qiankun Pillar is the must-shoot
  • Lodging on the mountain is basic but catches sunrise and sunset; book ahead

Scams to avoid

  • Unofficial parking lots around the park overcharge; use the official scenic-area lots
  • Roadside 'local guides' may take you on unofficial routes with no safety guarantee
  • Mountain food is pricey and mediocre; bring your own snacks
