Tianmen Cave is a geological feature, carved by erosion over millions of years, and the mountain has been a Daoist and Buddhist site for centuries; Tianmen Mountain Temple on the summit traces back to the Tang dynasty. The area opened to tourism in 2005 when the cable car was finished, and the glass walkway followed in 2011. In 1999, pilots flew light aircraft through the arch in a televised stunt that first put the mountain on the international map. Note that Tianmen is not part of the Wulingyuan UNESCO site (inscribed 1992) — that is the separate Avatar park 40 km away — a mix-up that derails a lot of first-time itineraries.

From the airport, a taxi or DiDi takes 10-15 minutes and costs ¥20-30. From the high-speed Zhangjiajie West Railway Station (opened 2019), it is about 8 km — ¥30-40 and 20 minutes by taxi. Local buses 4, 6 and 10 run along roads near the lower station. Buy your ticket at the station or, better, pre-book on the official WeChat mini-program, since same-day cable-car slots sell out.
