Zhouzhuang Water Town (周庄古镇, Zhōuzhuāng Gǔzhèn)

Zhouzhuang (周庄) is the most famous of the six Jiangnan water towns, located 30 kilometers northeast of Suzhou in Kunshan County. The town covers approximately 1 square kilometer and is built around a network of canals fed by the Wangyu River system, connected by 100 stone bridges (mostly Ming and Qing Dynasty) and divided into 10 islands by the waterways. Known as the "Venice of the East," Zhouzhuang has been a tourist destination since the 1980s and is the most commercialized of the major water towns — but its canals, bridges, and historic architecture are genuinely impressive and the crowds are manageable in early morning and evening.

What to expect

Zhouzhuang's history dates to 1086 CE when it was known as Yuanjing (原涧) — a small market town built around a canal junction. The current canal system was largely established during the Ming and Qing dynasties as the town prospered from the silk and grain trade. The Double Bridges (双桥), consisting of the Shenyuan Bridge (世德桥) and Yong'an Bridge (永安桥) built in 1573 and 1729 respectively, became Zhouzhuang's most famous image — the zigzag bridge and the square bridge crossing at right angles, with a boat passing through. This image, painted by artist Chen Yifei in 1984 and subsequently widely reproduced, launched Zhouzhuang's tourism.

The town is at its most atmospheric in the early morning and evening, when the day-trippers have left and the locals reclaim the canals. Local women still wash clothes at the stone steps; small wooden boats deliver goods to the restaurants; the old men play chess by the water. The double bridges area is the tourist center — from here, the town's 100 bridges and 800-year-old buildings fan out in all directions. The main historic houses (沈厅, 张厅) are restored Ming and Qing residences with the characteristic "one river, two banks" (一河两街) urban pattern.

Zhouzhuang is the most commercialized of the Jiangnan water towns, but the commercialization has made it the most accessible: well-signed, with English at major attractions, a wide range of restaurants and guesthouses, and reliable boat services. The boat rides (¥120–150 per boat, holds 6 passengers) on the canals are a must — the boatman poles the flat-bottomed wooden boat through the narrow waterways, and the perspective from water level is completely different from the bridge-level view. At night, the town is illuminated and the canals take on a different character.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zhouzhuang worth visiting if I am going to Tongli?

Yes — Zhouzhuang and Tongli are different characters despite both being water towns. Zhouzhuang is larger, more famous, more commercialized, and has better tourism infrastructure. Tongli is smaller, more authentic as a living community, and has the UNESCO garden. See Zhouzhuang first for the "classic" water town experience, then Tongli for the deeper experience. Or see both on a two-day trip.

Can I visit Zhouzhuang from Shanghai as a day trip?

Yes — it is one of the most popular day trips from Shanghai, about 90 minutes by bus from Shanghai Stadium. Many travel agencies sell day trip packages including transport and entry. However, the town is most atmospheric in the evening and early morning, so an overnight stay is strongly recommended if you want the authentic experience.

What is the Double Bridges?

The Double Bridges (双桥) consist of Shenyuan Bridge (世德桥, a 40-meter arched bridge) and Yong'an Bridge (永安桥, a square bridge) crossing at right angles, creating the "key and lock" (钥匙桥) configuration. This image became Zhouzhuang's symbol after artist Chen Yifei painted it in 1984, and it has been widely reproduced ever since.

Is Zhouzhuang wheelchair accessible?

Very limited. The old town's stone-paved lanes are narrow (1–1.5m), all bridges have steps, and the canals have no barriers. Standard wheelchairs cannot navigate the town. Not suitable for wheelchair users.

What should I eat in Zhouzhuang?

Zhouzhuang's signature dishes include: wonton soup (馄饨), three-layer tea (三道茶 — a sweet rice wine tea ritual), 万三蹄 (Wansan pig's trotters — braised pork knuckle), and dragon well tea (龙井茶) from nearby Hangzhou. The food is similar to Tongli and Luzhi — the Jiangnan water towns share culinary traditions.
