Jingpohu at a Glance
Jingpohu (镜泊湖) — Jingpo Lake — is a national geopark in southeastern Heilongjiang, run as day trips out of the transit city of Mudanjiang, a shuttle of about 1.5 hours. The lake itself is the oddity: not a mountain reservoir but a river dammed by lava some 10,000 years ago, so it runs about 45 kilometres end to end, covers near 90 square kilometres and drops past 60 metres at its deepest. Why Jingpohu
Most Chinese lakes are basins; Jingpohu is a plumbing event. When lava flows from the volcanoes west of the valley blocked the Mudanjiang river, the water backed up into a long, narrow lake threaded with bays — and because the dam is rock, the water stayed clear. The boat in the photo above works the same water the lava made.
The second layer is historical: south of the lake at Bohai town stood the capital of the Bohai kingdom (698-926 AD), the Balhae state of the Korean histories, and its walled ruins — first-batch national protection in 1961 — anchor the southern day. Add the crater forests northwest and the calendar runs four seasons deep: cruises in summer, icefall and ice fishing in winter.
The honest trade-offs: this is a scenic-area trip, not a city trip — you will sleep by the north gate or back in Mudanjiang; English signage is thin; and in July-August the domestic crowds are heavy. Come early in the day or shoulder-season and the lake returns to the rowers.
Diaoshuilou Waterfall: the Outflow
The falls are the geopark's front door. The Mudanjiang river leaves the lake here and pours over a basalt lip near 25 metres tall and 40 metres wide — a broad white curtain into a green plunge pool, the scene below in evening light. On summer afternoons, local divers work the cliff jumping from the lip for the crowds; the platform by the falls is the geopark's busiest spot, and the Black Dragon Pool beneath it is where winter turns the curtain into a solid blue icefall that climbers wait for.

The Lake: Bays, Islets and the Full Cruise
The full cruise is the lake day. Boats work the bays all day from the wharves near the north gate, threading past Dagu and Xiaogu islets along rock bluffs like the ones in the photo below — the lava dam's own bones sticking out of the water. The lake runs about 45 kilometres north to south, and the cruise versions range from a short loop to most of a day; in summer the water is the coolest air in Heilongjiang.
Book boats at the wharf rather than through hotel desks, go before 10:00 in season, and keep the north-shore walk for the evening — the sun sets down the lake's long axis.
The Craters: the Underground Forest
Northwest of the lake, roughly 50 kilometres out, the lava tableland holds collapsed craters several hundred metres wide and past 100 metres deep — deep enough that old red pines grow on the crater floors, giving the district its name, the "Underground Forest". Walk the caldera circuit, then the geology hall at the entrance explains the eruption sequence that dammed the lake. It is a half-day from the north gate, cool even in August, and the quietest of the geopark's three headlines.
Bohai Town: the Ruined Capital
South of the lake at Bohai town stand the walled ruins of the capital of the Bohai kingdom — the state that held this coast-and-mountains march from 698 to 926 AD. The palace terraces and courtyard footprints are legible on the ground, protection dates to the first national batch in 1961, and the site museum fills in the foreign-trade story. Close by, Xinglong Temple keeps a stone lantern near 6 metres tall, one of the region's signature survivals. The southern day pairs the ruins with the temple and the stone-paddy country around Ning'an; the shuttle back to Mudanjiang catches the evening trains.
A Three-Day Plan (and a Week)
- Day 1 — the falls. Shuttle in from Mudanjiang (about 1.5 hours), settle by the north gate, walk to Diaoshuilou — the 100 CNY combined ticket covers it. Cliff dives on summer afternoons.
- Day 2 — the lake. Full cruise from the wharf past Dagu and Xiaogu islets, north-shore walk at dusk. In winter, swap this for the icefall morning and the frozen-lake fishing villages.
- Day 3 — the ruins. Down to Bohai town for the walled capital and Xinglong Temple's stone lantern, then the shuttle back for evening trains from Mudanjiang.

Where to Stay
Two options with different tempers. By the north gate, hotel rows sit within walking distance of the falls and the wharf — mid-range rooms run about 300-600 CNY a night in season, and the lake is out the door at dawn. Or sleep in Mudanjiang and commute — cheaper rooms, better trains, a 1.5-hour shuttle each way. Reserve 1-2 weeks ahead for July-August and the early-February ice window.
What to Eat
The table runs on lake fish and northern farm cooking: cold-water fish from the lake grilled or in stews, corn and potato dishes, dumplings, and the mushroom-and-fungus forage the forest districts are known for. The north-gate hotel street concentrates the tourist version; the family restaurants in Bohai town do the honest one. Fish season peaks with the summer cruises and the winter ice fishery.

Spring and autumn are quiet and thin on services. Avoid the national holiday weeks — early May and, above all, the first week of October — when the north gate queues for hours.
