Lijiang · Visitor Guide
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yùlóng Xuěshān) is a 5,596m glaciated mountain 15 km north of Lijiang, the nearest significant snow peak to a major Chinese city. The mountain's 13 peaks are covered in glaciers descending to 4,000m, visible from Lijiang on clear mornings as a white saw-tooth against the Yunnan sky. The main tourist access is via three cable car systems (冰川大索道) that ascend to 4,506m on the main peak, allowing visitors to walk to the glacier viewing platform and (in good weather) to the summit trail at 4,680m. The area is part of the Three Parallel Rivers UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is named for its shape: from Lijiang's flat valley floor, the 13 peaks of the Shanzhuroong massif resemble a jade dragon curled above the city, its snow line tracing the dragon's spine. The mountain is geologically active — it is a horst mountain formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, the same process that created the Himalayas. The glaciers on its northern face have been retreating since the Little Ice Age and are the most studied in China's subtropics.
The cable car (大索道, "Big Cable Car") ascends 1,000m in 10 minutes from 3,350m to 4,506m, the highest cable car access point in Yunnan. At the top, a 1km viewing platform loop (栈道) at 4,506m allows visitors to view the glacier and, on clear days, the summit at 5,596m. The thin air at 4,500m affects everyone — headaches, breathlessness, and fatigue are normal. Oxygen bottles are sold at the cable car station (¥20–30) and are recommended for visitors unused to altitude. The temperature at the top is 10–15°C below Lijiang; even in summer, warm layers are essential.
The area around the cable car base has been developed into a theme-park-like experience: there is a Naxi cultural show (印象丽江, ¥190), several ethnic village visits, a yak meadow (牦牛坪), and hiking trails. The most atmospheric experience is the early morning before the clouds roll in and before the tour groups arrive. The Baisha Old Town at the mountain's foot has a Naxi fresco that predates Lijiang's old town.

The most popular option is a day tour from Lijiang (¥380–480) that includes transport, cable car, park entry, and usually lunch. This is the most practical option for international visitors as the logistics (cable car booking, oxygen, altitude acclimatisation) are managed by the operator.

Almost certainly to some degree at 4,500m. Symptoms range from mild headache and breathlessness to nausea. Buy oxygen at the base station (¥20–30), walk slowly, and descend if symptoms worsen. Do not ascend to the platform if you already feel unwell at Lijiang (2,400m).
Early morning (arrive at 07:00) for the clearest skies. October–March for the best overall visibility. Summer afternoons are usually cloudy. The mountain is visible from Lijiang most mornings before 10:00.
