What to expect
The 798 complex was originally Joint Factory 718, a military electronics plant built with Soviet funding and East German architectural design. The Bauhaus-style sawtooth roofs were functional — they let in north-facing light ideal for precision electronics work — and now provide the same diffused light that galleries covet. After the factory declined in the 1990s, artists moved in for the cheap rent and massive spaces, gradually transforming the district into Beijing's answer to SoHo or Berlin's Mitte.
Today, 798 is a mix of serious contemporary art institutions (UCCA, Pace Gallery, Tang Contemporary), smaller experimental spaces, and commercial storefronts selling ¥80 prints and overpriced lattes. The tension between art and commerce is part of the atmosphere. On weekends, it is crowded with young Beijingers taking photos for Xiaohongshu; on weekday mornings, you can have entire gallery rooms to yourself.
The 751 D-Park section, with its preserved gas towers and industrial pipelines, has been converted into a design plaza with exhibition spaces. It feels more industrial and less commercial than the main 798 drag. The giant decommissioned gas holders now host fashion shows and immersive projections.
How to get there
Metro Line 14 to Wangjing South (望京南) station, Exit B1. Walk north along Jiuxianqiao Road for 15 minutes, or take a DiDi (¥10–15, 5 minutes). The main entrance is at the intersection of Jiuxianqiao Road and 798 Road. Buses 403, 418, and 445 stop at Dashanzi Lukou East (大山子路口东), a 5-minute walk from the main gate.
