Dali Old Town (大理古城, Dàlǐ Gǔchéng)
Dali Old Town sits on a plateau between Erhai Lake and the Cangshan Mountain range at 2,000 m. Once the capital of the Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms (8th–13th centuries), it retains its Ming Dynasty walls and Bai ethnic architecture. The old town is a backpacker favorite: cafés, craft shops, and guesthouses fill the cobbled lanes. Buddha-themed bars and drum circles exist alongside genuine Bai culture — morning markets, tie-dye workshops, and the Three Pagodas (9th century) just north of town.

What to expect
Dali is the backpacker capital of Yunnan — a relaxed, walkable old town with stone walls, cobbled streets, and a view of the 4,000 m Cangshan range on one side and Erhai Lake on the other. Unlike Lijiang (which feels like a tourist mall), Dali retains some authenticity: morning markets where Bai women sell produce in traditional dress, tie-dye workshops using natural indigo, and local restaurants serving er kuai (饵块, grilled rice cakes) and rushan (乳扇, grilled cheese — rare in Chinese cuisine).
The Three Pagodas (三塔), built in the 9th century, are Dali's iconic landmark — three brick pagodas aligned symmetrically, surviving multiple earthquakes over 1,200 years. The main pagoda (Qianxun Pagoda) is 69.6 m tall. Cangshan Mountain offers day hikes with views across Erhai Lake; the cable car to the upper station (3,900 m) is the highest in China.

Can I bike around Erhai Lake?
Yes — the full loop is 120 km (7–9 hours by e-bike, 2 days by regular bicycle). Most visitors ride the 50 km west shore segment (Dali Old Town to Xizhou and back, 4–5 hours). E-bike rental: ¥50–80/day. Regular bike: ¥20–40/day. Start early — the afternoon wind is strong.
What is rushan (乳扇)?
