The Songhua is Harbin's mother river and the stage for a century of the city's history. Rising near Heaven Lake on Changbai Mountain, it winds north and widens into a broad ribbon at Harbin. In winter the frozen surface becomes a public playground of skating, ice karts, horse-drawn sledges and spinning ice tops.
In summer the river glitters and the embankment becomes the city's coolest retreat. Cruise boats drift past the Flood Control Memorial Tower on the south bank — Harbin's landmark — toward Sun Island across the water, under the long span of the Songhua River Bridge.
A cableway crosses the river between the south bank and Sun Island with the best aerial views. At night both embankments light up, echoing the glow of Ice and Snow World for the city's brightest night scene.
Take Metro Line 2 to People's Square station and walk to the Flood Control Memorial Tower to reach the riverside. Buses stop at Flood Control Memorial Tower or Central Street.
