Banpo Neolithic Museum半坡博物馆

Banpo Museum preserves a 6,000-year-old Neolithic village discovered in 1953 — one of China's most important archaeological sites from the Yangshao culture. Walkways cross the excavation pits so you can peer down into the foundations of 45 round houses, storage cellars and the communal moat that ringed the settlement.

Quick Answer

What to expect

The museum is built over the excavation site itself: two great halls shelter the dig, where the ground is sliced open to show house foundations, kilns and burial plots in situ. The villager life is explained through pottery, bone tools and grain stores — evidence of a matriarchal farming society that thrived here around 4,500 BCE.

Beyond the dig halls, a reconstructed village section recreates thatched huts and a settlement fence for scale, which children tend to enjoy. The site sits beside the Chan River terraces where the villagers farmed millet.

How to get there

Metro Line 1 (toward Fangzhicheng) to Banpo Station, Exit C, then a 10-minute walk along Banpo Road. From the Terracotta Army, tourist bus 307 connects both in about 40 minutes.

Best photo spots

  • The central excavation pit viewed from the walkway
  • The reconstructed thatched village
  • The Yangshao pottery display hall

Tips

  • Combines naturally with the Terracotta Army on the same eastern excursion
  • Signage is part-English; the excavation halls have better captions than the pottery hall
