What to expect
The approach from Lijiang passes through Naxi villages and terraced fields before the road climbs into the mountain's shadow. At the cable car station (甘海子), you board a Swiss-made cabin that rises 2.4 kilometers to the glacier park at 4,680 meters. The altitude hits immediately — walking 100 meters feels like 500, and the temperature drops from Lijiang's mild spring to near-zero. Oxygen cans (¥30) are sold at the station.
At the top, a boardwalk winds through the glacier park past ice formations and viewpoints. The main platform looks west toward Shanzhuroong, the highest peak. The glacier is visible but retreated — the visible ice is mostly permanent snow. The scale of the mountain is impossible to photograph; it fills the entire sky and dwarfs the viewing platform.
Below the glacier park, the Blue Valley (牦牛坪, Yak Meadow) is a high plateau at 3,700 meters connected by a separate cable car. Yaks graze here against the full backdrop of the 13 peaks — this is the most spectacular single view in the Lijiang area and less crowded than the glacier park.
