What to expect
The Xi'an City Wall was originally built during the Sui and Tang dynasties (581–907 AD) when Xi'an (then Chang'an) was the largest city in the world. The current structure dates to 1370, when the Hongwu Emperor of the Ming Dynasty ordered the city walls massively expanded and reinforced. The wall is a rammed-earth core faced with grey bricks — over 15 million bricks were used. It is surrounded by a 15-meter-wide moat, now landscaped into a ring-shaped park with weeping willows and workout stations.
The wall has four main gates — South (永宁, Yongning), North (安远, Anyuan), East (长乐, Changle), and West (安定, Anding) — each a fortress-like complex with watchtowers, arrow towers, and drawbridge mechanisms. The South Gate is the most impressive and best-restored, with a dramatic lighting scheme after dark. Smaller gates (18 total) were added in the 20th century to accommodate traffic.
I biked the full loop in about 2 hours with photo stops. The surface is surprisingly bumpy — ancient bricks are not a velodrome — and my wrists were sore by the end. The view alternates between the old city inside (low-rise buildings, the Bell Tower visible in the distance, temple roofs) and the new city outside (high-rises, shopping malls, flyovers). The contrast is the point. The stretch between the South and West Gates has the best old-city views.
How to get there
Metro Line 2 to Yongningmen (永宁门 / South Gate), Exit A1 or D1. Walk 2 minutes to the gate entrance. The South Gate has the main ticket office, bike rental, and the most dramatic entrance — you walk through the gate complex to reach the wall-top. All four main gates have bike rental, but the South Gate has the most bikes.
