What to expect

Sea World on Taizi Road in Shekou, Nanshan District, is one of Shenzhen's best-known waterfront leisure areas. At its center sits the Minghua, a luxury cruise liner built in France, bought by the Chinese government in 1973 for international service and permanently beached on the Shekou shore after retiring in 1983, then converted into an upscale dining and entertainment complex. The interior was refitted with care and keeps the liner's original grand manner: upscale restaurants on the first deck, bars and entertainment venues on the second, and an observation deck on top looking across Shenzhen Bay to Hong Kong.

Around the ship a bar street, cafes and restaurants line the waterfront — the first choice for Shenzhen's young crowd at night. The bar street runs along the shoreline, dozens of bars and clubs of every style lighting up after dark with music spilling from each doorway. The Nüwa seaside park and the Shekou port waterfront promenade nearby make for an easy stroll, and every evening the central plaza plays a free water-screen movie that draws crowds of locals and visitors. On clear days you can make out the Shenzhen Bay Bridge and Hong Kong across the water.

Come toward evening: a seaside walk for sunset, dinner, then the bar street for a taste of Shenzhen nightlife. Prices run mid-to-high. Several parking lots serve the area but jam up at night — the metro is the better bet. Nearby sights include the Sea World Culture and Arts Center and the Shekou Value Factory.

How to get there

Metro Line 2 to Sea World Station Exit A, then about 5 minutes on foot. Buses 22, 37, 70 and 80 stop at Sea World. From Shenzhen North Station, Line 4 to Futian then transfer to Line 2, about 45 minutes.

  • Go toward evening — sunset walk, night view, then the bar street in order

  • Summer nights are lively — this is Shenzhen's most nightlife-charged spot
  • Plenty of dining choices nearby, from fast food to upscale restaurants

  • Some bars enforce minimum-spend rules — ask before you sit down
