What to expect

Shenzhen Bay Park runs along the Shenzhen Bay shore in Nanshan District — the city's best-known waterfront park, stretching about 15 km along the coast as Shenzhen's longest coastal greenway. It divides into themed zones including Sea Breeze Sports Park, Sunrise Theater, Tide Park, the Migratory Bird Station and the Marriage and Family Culture Park, all well equipped and richly landscaped. Trees shade parallel walking and cycling paths that serve every kind of visitor, and on clear days the Shenzhen Bay Bridge and Hong Kong's skyline line the horizon.

This is Shenzhen's premier birdwatching site. Each October through April, waves of migratory birds — black-headed gulls, black-winged stilts, egrets and dozens more — winter on the bay, and purpose-built bird hides let you watch the spectacle without disturbing the birds. The Sunrise Theater is a superb spot for daybreak; on holidays locals gather here for tai chi and square dancing, and at dusk the golden light on the water draws out the photographers.

Plan your visit: come toward evening for sunset and the night skyline. Walk or cycle — motor vehicles are banned (bicycles may use the cycle track). There are no large restaurants in the park, only a few vending machines, so bring your own drinks. On foot you can reach Sea World (about 2 km) or Shenzhen Bay Port (about 3 km). The Marriage and Family Culture Park is an Instagram favorite, best shot at dusk.

How to get there

Shenzhen Metro Line 9 to Shenzhen Bay Park, Exit D2, about a 5-minute walk to the park's core. Line 11 to Houhai, Exit G, about 10 minutes on foot. Buses B816 and M483 stop at Shenzhen Bay Park. From Shenzhen North station, take Line 4 to Futian and transfer to Line 11, about 35 minutes.

Best photo spots

  • Shenzhen Bay Bridge (the classic angle)
  • The Marriage and Family Culture Park (the Instagram landmark)
  • Sunrise Theater (for dawn and dusk)
  • The migratory-bird watching area (winter)
  • The coastal cycling path

Tips

  • Come toward evening to catch both sunset and the night view
  • Cycling covers far more of the shore than walking; shared bikes work in the park
  • Winter is birdwatching season
  • There is little shade — in summer, sun protection is essential
  • Sea World is a 2 km walk away and pairs well

Scams to avoid

  • No major scams to worry about
