Why is it called the Forbidden City?
The name "Forbidden City" (紫禁城) comes from the fact that it was forbidden to enter without imperial permission. "Zi" (紫) refers to the "Ziwei" (紫微) constellation — the constellation of the Emperor in traditional Chinese astronomy — and the palace was considered the center of the universe on earth. The name "Palace Museum" (故宫博物院) refers to its current function as a museum.
