The Shanxi Museum (山西博物院) opened in its current purpose-built building in 2005 in Taiyuan's Wanbolin District. - Taiyuan is primarily a business/industrial city — the Shanxi Museum is the main reason to visit and is best combined with Pingyao Ancient City (2 hours by high-speed train from Taiyuan South)

The Pingyao museums (such as the Shanxi Museum of Local History / 山西地方志博物馆) are small heritage-site museums inside ancient city buildings. Shanxi Museum is the major national-level institution.
What makes the Jin Dynasty gold collection special?

Yes — Taiyuan South Station to Pingyao Ancient City is 2 hours by high-speed train. A morning museum visit (9:00-12:00) + afternoon Pingyao visit is feasible but rushed. Better: museum morning + Pingyao overnight to see the ancient city at night.
What is the connection between Shanxi and Chinese porcelain history?
Shanxi was a major center forceramic production in the Northern Wei and Tang periods, producing the "Shanxi black glaze" and "Shanxi white porcelain" traditions. The museum has an excellent ceramics collection showing this history alongside the better-known Ding and Ru kiln traditions.
