Li River (漓江, Lí Jiāng)
The Li River connects Guilin to Yangshuo through 83 km of the world's most photographed karst landscape — limestone cones draped in green, water buffalo on the banks, cormorant fishermen at dusk. The scenery appears on the ¥20 banknote. The cruise takes 4 hours; bamboo rafts (motorized, 4-seater) cover the most scenic 9 km stretch. This landscape has inspired Chinese painters and poets for 1,000+ years.

What to expect
The Li River cuts through a landscape of karst limestone that was once an ancient seafloor. Over 300 million years, water dissolved the rock into the fantastical shapes that make this one of the most painted, photographed, and poeticized landscapes on Earth. The cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo passes through the best of it: peaks with names like "Elephant Trunk Hill" and "Mural Hill" (the ¥20 note view), water buffalo cooling in the shallows, and the improbable sight of cormorant fishermen who have been using trained birds to catch fish here for 1,000+ years.
The bamboo rafts are now PVC tubes with outboard motors (bamboo is too expensive and not durable). They cover the 9 km Yangdi–Xingping stretch — the most dramatic scenery — in about an hour. It is less romantic than the slow cruise but takes you closer to the water and the peaks. The cruise is more comfortable (air-con, lunch, commentary) but the 4-hour duration can feel long in bad weather.
How to get there
Cruise: bus from Guilin train station area to Zhujiang Pier (1 hour, ¥30 by tour bus). Bamboo raft: bus from Guilin to Yangdi village (1.5 hours, ¥20), then walk to the raft dock. Yangshuo is the endpoint for both.
Best photo spots
- Xingping — the ¥20 note view, best at sunrise or late afternoon
- The bamboo raft dock at Yangdi — rafts in the foreground, peaks behind
- Xianggong Mountain (相公山) — the panoramic viewpoint 30 min from Yangshuo, climb at 5:00 AM for the iconic misty sunrise
Tips
- The bamboo raft is the better experience for most travelers — shorter, cheaper, more intimate
- Book the cruise 1–2 days ahead through your hotel or a travel agent
- Bring sun protection — the rafts have no shade and the reflection off the water is intense
- The cruise lunch is mediocre — bring snacks
- Stay in Yangshuo, not Guilin — the town is surrounded by karst peaks and you can bike between them
Scams to avoid
- Touts at Guilin bus station selling "private Li River tours" at inflated prices — book through your hotel
- "Cormorant fishing photo" in Yangshuo — the fisherman demands ¥20–50 after you take the photo
Frequently asked questions
Is the Li River cruise or bamboo raft better?
Bamboo raft (Yangdi–Xingping, 9 km, 1–1.5 hours, ¥180–250/raft) — closer to the water, more exciting, covers the best scenery. Cruise (83 km, 4 hours, ¥300–500) — more comfortable, lunch included, covers the full river but can feel long. For most travelers, the raft is the better experience. For elderly visitors or those with mobility issues, the cruise is preferable.
How do I get from Guilin to the Li River?
For the cruise: bus to Zhujiang Pier (1 hour). For the bamboo raft: bus to Yangdi village (1.5 hours). Both depart from the Guilin bus station area. Hotels and tour agencies arrange transport. DiDi from Guilin to Yangdi: ¥150–200.
Is the Li River crowded?
Yes — the cruise boats depart in a convoy each morning (20–30 boats). The bamboo rafts are more spread out but still busy on weekends and holidays. April–May and September–November weekdays are the sweet spot. The river at 7:30 AM (first rafts) or 16:00 (last rafts) is noticeably quieter.
What is the best time of day on the Li River?
Morning (7:30–10:00 AM) for the classic mist-shrouded peaks. Late afternoon for golden light on the karst. Midday is harsh, hot, and most crowded. The bamboo raft at 7:30 AM with morning mist is the money shot.
Can I swim in the Li River?
The water quality is variable — not recommended in the Guilin stretch. Around Yangshuo, some sections are cleaner and locals swim, but there are no designated swimming areas. The river can have strong currents after rain.
How many days do I need in Guilin/Yangshuo?
3 days minimum. Day 1: Li River journey to Yangshuo. Day 2: Yangshuo countryside biking + Xianggong Mountain. Day 3: Longji Rice Terraces day trip. 4 days adds Reed Flute Cave and Elephant Trunk Hill in Guilin.
