Yao Mountain尧山

Yao Mountain (尧山) is the highest peak in the Guilin area at 909 meters above sea level, located about 10 km east of the city center in the YAO MOUNTAIN scenic area. It is not the most famous Guilin peak (that would be Elephant Trunk Hill), but it offers the most comprehensive panoramic view of Guilin's karst landscape — on a clear day you can see the entire Guilin basin, the Li River winding through it, and dozens of karst peaks rising from the plain. The mountain is named for the legendary Emperor Yao (尧), who is said to have visited the region. The summit hosts the largest Buddha statue in Guangxi (the 18-meter-tall Puxian Buddha, 普贤大佛), and the mountain is accessible by cable car from the base station.

What to expect

Yao Mountain is the answer to the question every Guilin visitor asks: where can I see the whole picture? From Elephant Trunk Hill you see one formation. From the Li River cruise you see the river and the nearest peaks. From Yao Mountain you see everything — the entire Guilin basin spread out below you, the Li River like a silver thread, and karst peaks rising from the plain in every direction. On a clear day with low haze (the best conditions are winter mornings and autumn afternoons), the view is genuinely extraordinary and unlike anything you see at ground level.

The 18-meter Puxian Buddha statue at the summit was carved from the mountain's natural granite in 2003 and is the largest Buddha statue in Guangxi. The statue represents Puxian (Samantabhadra), the Bodhisattva of Universal Goodness in Buddhist tradition. The summit area also has a small temple (尧寺), a few souvenir stalls, and a viewing platform. The cable car station is a short walk from the Buddha statue.

Practical notes: the summit is always colder than the city below — bring a light jacket even in summer. The cable car operates in most weather but may close during thunderstorms or high winds (you will be refunded or offered the hiking trail). The hiking trail is steep but well-maintained — allow 2–3 hours for the ascent. The best visibility is in the morning; by 2:00 PM haze typically reduces visibility significantly.

How to get there

From central Guilin: bus 4 or 16 to the Yao Mountain turnoff (尧山路口), then DiDi ¥10 to the base station. DiDi directly to the base station: ¥30–40, 30 minutes from anywhere in Guilin. Driving: head east on the Guilin–Yangshuo road (桂阳公路) and follow signs for Yao Mountain scenic area. Parking available at the base station (¥10).

Best photo spots

  • Summit viewing platform — the 360-degree panorama of the Guilin basin, best in the morning
  • Puxian Buddha statue at the summit — the 18 m statue with karst peaks in the background
  • Cable car — the red cable cars against the green karst landscape, photographed from the ground or from the summit
  • Base station approach — the traditional Chinese gate (山门) with Yao Mountain rising behind

Tips

  • Go early morning — visibility is best before 10:00 AM; haze builds through the afternoon and by 14:00 you may not see the city below
  • Combine with a visit to Seven Star Park or the Civilization Museum in the afternoon — the park closes at 17:30 and an afternoon visit works well
  • Take the cable car up and hike down if you have energy — the hiking trail is scenic and descending is easier than ascending (allow 2 hours down)
  • Check the weather before going — if the forecast is overcast or rainy, cancel; you will see only clouds from the summit
  • The summit is cold in winter (December–February) — temperatures can be 5–8°C lower than in Guilin city

Scams to avoid

  • Taxi drivers offering "Yao Mountain tours" with a stop at a "local tea plantation" — the tea stop is a commission trap; go directly to the mountain base station
  • Vendors at the summit selling "blessed" Buddha statues or incense — the prices are inflated; the temple has standard incense available for ¥10
  • Fake ticket sellers near the bus stop — buy tickets at the official ticket office or online

Frequently asked questions

Is Yao Mountain better than other Guilin viewpoints?

It is different. Elephant Trunk Hill is about one famous formation. Yao Mountain is about seeing the whole Guilin landscape at once — dozens of karst peaks, the Li River, and the entire basin. If you only have one viewpoint, Yao Mountain gives the most complete picture. If you want the most famous photo, Elephant Trunk Hill is the symbol of Guilin.

Is the cable car safe?

Yes — the Yao Mountain cable car is a modern detachable grip system, regularly maintained, and operated by licensed staff. It has operated since 1993 without a major incident. The cable cars seat 6–8 passengers. In high winds or thunderstorms the cable car closes temporarily.

Can I hike Yao Mountain without the cable car?

Yes — there is a hiking trail from the base station to the summit, 2–3 hours uphill (allow 3–4 hours going up, 2 hours going down). The trail is steep in sections but well-maintained with stone steps in the lower section and dirt paths near the top. You do not need a guide — the trail is clearly marked. Hiking is free (no park ticket needed if you only use the hiking trail).

What should I wear?

Comfortable hiking shoes or trail shoes. The trail can be muddy after rain. Bring a light jacket — the summit is 5–8°C cooler than the city base. In summer, sunscreen and a hat are essential. In winter, a warm layer is needed.

Can I see the Li River from Yao Mountain?

Yes — on clear days the Li River is visible as a silver ribbon crossing the Guilin basin, particularly visible when the river is high (summer flooding season). The best view of the Li River from Yao Mountain is actually in summer when the river is swollen and the karst peaks contrast strongly with the water.
