Shangxia Walkway (上下九步行街, Shàngxià Jiǔ Bùxíng Jiē)
Shangxia Walkway is a 1.2-kilometer north-south pedestrian street in Liwan District, built in the 1930s as a commercial arcade in the Art Deco style that was sweeping global cities at the time. The result is a distinctive blend: Western Art Deco pilasters and geometric facades with Cantonese ceramic tile roofs and dragon motifs. It has been a commercial street for over 80 years and today operates as a mid-market shopping area with a mix of silk shops, Cantonese pastry stores, and budget fashion. What to expect
The street runs through the historic Xiguan (West Gate) district, which was the hub of Cantonese merchant culture in the late Qing and early Republic. The buildings date from the 1930s reconstruction, when the original single-story arcade shops were replaced with the current four-to-five-story Art Deco buildings. The Cantonese architectural signature is unmistakable: ceramic tile roofs with upturned eaves on top of otherwise Western Art Deco facades, and the long covered arcade galleries (骑楼, qílóu) that shade the footpath and allow shopping in rain or blazing sun.
The shopping is mid-market by Guangzhou standards — not the luxury of Tianhe Road, not the bargain basement of the train station markets. Expect silk shops selling scarves and shirts (¥100–300 for a silk shirt, negotiable), Cantonese herbal tea shops (凉茶, liangcha), and bakeries selling egg tarts and wife cakes (老公饼). The Guangzhou local experience is to walk the arcade, buy a silk shirt, eat dim sum at the neighboring restaurant, and call it a day.
The nearby blocks hold some of the most historically significant Cantonese food establishments: the original Chen's Chip (陈添记, for fish skin) is a 5-minute walk west; the original Tao Tao Ju (陶陶居, for dim sum) is a 10-minute walk north on Beijing Lu.

Is this a good place to buy silk?
Yes — there are several established silk shops on the street and the adjacent blocks. Expect to pay ¥150–400 for a silk shirt, depending on quality. Negotiate politely. Look for the 100% silk labels (全真丝) and avoid synthetic blends marketed as silk.
How does this connect to other Guangzhou attractions?
Shangxia is 10 minutes north of the Cantonese food district (Chen Clan Ancestral Hall area), 15 minutes northwest of Shamian Island, and 15 minutes north of Beijing Lu. It works well as part of a half-day walking route through Liwan District.
