The Guangzhou Museum is housed in Zhenhai Tower (镇海楼, "Sea-calming Tower"), the iconic 5-story red pagoda visible on Yuexiu Hill from across the city. Built in 1380 during the Ming Dynasty, the tower is itself the main exhibit. Inside: 3,000+ years of Guangzhou history including Nanyue Kingdom tomb artifacts, the Thirteen Factories (Canton trade system), the First Opium War, and modern Cantonese history. The tower provides the best skyline view of the city.

Zhenhai Tower is one of the most photographed buildings in Guangzhou and a Ming Dynasty original. The museum is the perfect primer before exploring the Nanyue King Tomb Museum, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, or the Thirteen Factories.
